The Elephant House opens
21 George IV Bridge becomes the home of the Elephant House and quickly becomes established as one of the first and finest gourmet tea and coffee houses in Scotland
1996
Unknown authors
Due to the cafe's relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, the staff notice many regular customers enjoy writing overlooking Greyfriars Kirkyard and the Castle Rock.
1997
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
JK Rowling celebrates the unexpected success of her first novel and introduces herself to the team while being interviewed in the cafe about her plans for the future.
1998-2021
Potter Pilgrims
Over the space of two decades local customers and visitors from all over the world flocked to The Elephant House to enjoy a warm welcome and to celebrate the place where the early Harry Potter books came to life.
July 2021-November 2025
Disaster Strikes
Fire breaks out in the neighbouring business, and soon spreads across to the cafe. Despite the best efforts of the fire services The Elephant House suffers extensive damage. The business is unable to start operating again due to issues with the property that threaten the very survival of a beloved institution.
December 2025
The Magic Returns!
After four agonising years, and following extensive renovation work, The Elephant House is back and ready to welcome back our loyal customers.
